Birdsville – The Book ( a quick plug for my friends at Pearson)

Just recently published by Penguin (Blagh – Pearson! Sorry Shils and J), is a book by Evan McHugh called, you guessed it – “Birdsville” (my year in the back of beyond). Shileen had been reading it just before we left Sydney, and it was in most of the shops in the town. Unfortunately, food money comes before book money and we couldn’t buy one, but we met a few of the characters in the book – the SA nurse who now works in the bakery there, had a great chat with us while we ate her camel pies (true), and also Ron the QLD National parks Ranger, and his wife Lynne, who works at the library. Ron knows my friend Shileen’s brother, and good to our word to Shils, we sought him out and had a cuppa with him on the Friday. That is the great thing about these really small towns, people are happy to stop and ‘have a yarn’ with you, and don’t mind if you come and knock on their door saying that your best friend’s brother worked with them, and how about some tea?
The book looks great (not just the cover), and I recommend everyone to read it to get an understanding of what sort of life it is over there in such a remote town of 250 people.
